Hi Guys, I love Death Valley Talk, but I have pretty much given up on using it as an *everyday* forum. I will still make some posts to request information, but will no longer read it since it is such a waste of time!!!!!

I know I am entering a smaller community, but perhaps it will be more rewarding. Some of you know me - most do not. I was able to meet up
with Charles briefly last year at PC in March 2005. I hope to meet up with more of you some day, especially B-Spec-Subaru.

Tim aka Beveridge Flyer.

I will now dutifully submit some upcoming trips for your consideration!

Hi Tim, the man made famous by the Death March

One day I'll loose some weight and get up there.

Welcome, Tim. I have always enjoyed your trip reports, and look forward to more of them. My long term goal is to get into sufficient shape to go on one of your marches.

Yes, DeathValley Talk can be exasperating sometime. I see it as a different style of chat - much more "campfire-like". Topics come and go, and sort of fall off the end. This forum is much more suited for things like trip planning, etc. because of the organization.

Getting in Shape

Post by Beveridge Flyer »

To Andy, David, and others,

Believe it or not, the desire to go to Beveridge is what got me to get in better shape, though it is not easy. I have bad feet, ankles, and knees! I can no longer run at all. However, to get in shape for backpacking, I mountain bike and kayak, and hike once a week. Riding the bike doesn't bother my joints much. Kayaking is for upper body strength for carrying the pack (and my upper body is not trashed, like my lower body is). If I hike only once a week, my joints recover sufficiently in a week to allow me to hike again. If I hike more often, I can barely walk - or walk like an old man. During stuff like the Beveridge Death March, I pound down ibuprofen, and it works like a champ. I also take glucosamine / chondroitin (spelled wrong, i'm sure) every day, and it does seem to help my joint pain.

Anyways, I recommend that you commit to a date for a challenging back pack 3 or 4 months in advance, then let the fear of failure motivate you to get in shape and lose weight. My wife and I went on Adkins diet, and we lost about 25 pounds real fast - since then I've worked hard to keep it off. I always seem to be about 10 to 15 pounds overweight, though.
