New guy to the forum, old guy to DV territory

Post by oldtrailmaster »

Howdy folks,

As invited by Panamint Charlie's website, I am just stoppin' by to say hello. I've been out exploring DV since 1955, at age 4, when my dad and mom first took me to the National Monument. My love of the magnificent land runs very deep. This territory brings a serenity to my spirit that cannot be properly described in words. Sometimes I attempt it in poetry, but only when I'm actually out in the backcountry do I really feel it full-on! I appreciate the kind words written by Charlie and Chris regarding my new book! Thanks guys ... I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for YOU! I love to share my love of the wilds, and that is the reason behind the words. Take care my friends, and see you on the trail (if it hasn't been washed out by the elements) ...

Thanks for the welcome, Red Shoes Girl! It's certainly nice to be treated so well so soon after coming aboard. I visited your website and find the photos very well done! I attended Art Center College of Design in the early 70s, studied photography with the intent of entering into it professionally, but then moved on to other callings before taking the pro-plunge. I do still enjoy snapping images however, but today, instead of my old Hasselblad, I use a digital ... what a difference 30 years makes! This forum business is fun, but I can see how it could be very time consuming - I have been snooping around, and would love to comment here and there, sharing what I know with folks, but with my penchant for rambling on and on, I'd never get any other work completed! Take care, and remember to: Be Happy ... Be Wild

Not much to offer these days since I'm cleaning out the flickr (photo site) because of high pricing.

Hi Andy! You bet you can! Seems like everyone so far is asking for my "John Henry" for some reason. What, like I'm going to be famous some day or something? No matter the reason, this is kind of a high right now for me. The only time I ever gave out my autographs before this was in my two past lives: as a cop, I autographed motorists' tickets, and as a teacher, I autographed students' report cards (both kinds of autographs were the type that I imagine the recipient would have rather NOT received - ha ha). Send me off an email if you think you want a book, and I'll get you all set. Thanks for your interest, and thanks for your welcome also! Forgive if my reply is a little whacky tonight, but it's past my bedtime and my eyelids aren't working too well this late ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Howdy Desert4wd! Okay, this is my last reply, and then I'm hitting the sack for some shuteye!

I like the little waving icon fellow with the welcome sign ... cute. You and Andy both have some nice websites. I've run across them before, a year or so ago (probably stole some photos from them ... hee hee, only kidding). Well, you'll know if you see me out on the trail because I have an old dusty Xterra with no advertising on it anywhere (hate chrome), and the license plate is from Oregon (right now in my life, I'm a ways away, but since dear old mama lives just south of DVNP, I still get in there at least once a year, and sometimes more.

Hey Charlie! I just saw your post too. So I take it you have the order? Did that box make it through the postal service all in one piece? Actually, before you read the book, take it outside, throw it in the dirt, kick it once about twenty feet, stomp on it and twist your shoe, and then read. It will now have the real feel of the outback that it could never attain right off the press.

Okay folks ... good night! I'm getting punchy ...

Final thought for the night, playing off of what desert4wd said above:

WHERE THE PAVEMENT ENDS, LIFE BEGINS!

hey BTW, what is that line about just above my photo that says "Still Looking for Slim"?

We got a little bit confused too about that!! Thought we were stealing someones name right away! Not so! It's how often you post! The more you post the different the title you get!

Looking forward to maybe you signing my book!

Thanks Nancy for the explanation. Those little sayings are kind of cute! So, you're from British Columbia? I've explored up there a few times in the past six years ... now those are mountains! Just holler if you wish a book - I had to order 100 for my first run to get a decent price with a four-color cover using offset lithography, so I won't run out anytime real soon. See ya'
